How Much is Music Worth?

October 29th, 2007 · by Dan

Is 99 cents a song the magic number? No way. When a music service tested cutting prices in half, sales went up sixfold.

I would certainly download more songs with the price at 50 cents a song versus 99 cents. But with the price at 99 cents, I still strongly consider buying the CD. So maybe that means 99 cents is a fair price if it makes people think twice before downloading.

I agree. For purchasing an album it does seem like the price isn’t much less than buying a CD, and you can be sure you won’t lose rights to the song after it is copied 5 times (per iTunes rules). There at least should more of a discount for full album sales.

Another major issue is that iTunes takes a 30% cut off the top, while the artist (if signed by a label) is still ending up with about the same amount as before. So to lower costs either iTunes would have to lower their cut or artists should try and get their fans to user other, less expensive distribution services.
