CD’s Give Way to Memory Cards?

September 22nd, 2008 · by Dan

Record Labels and Box stores have a new format they want to sell you. Sony, Universal, Warner, EMI and retailers Best Buy Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are set to announce the sale of “slotMusic,” microSD memory cards.

the new format is meant to address two intertwined trends. Most albums are still sold in a physical format — 449 million were sold on CDs in 2007, while 50 million were sold digitally, according to Nielsen SoundScan — yet CDs are decreasingly popular. Albums sold on CD dropped almost 19 percent last year.

Not sure if this will work, seems a bit like throwing darts up on a board and hoping this will work. But I can see where the box stores want to be able to sell music in a physical format.
